Make your own gauge faces. This is hard. Don't try this if you don't have a lot of time. I suggest going to the junkyard and getting a cluster from another Scirocco and destroy that - so you can learn to do it without wrecking your cluster.
First - get the cluster out of the dash.
-
Take the Steering wheel off - 24mm Hex (Optional - but highly recommended!)
-
remove 2 screws on the trim around the cluster. The screws are Philips head and are on the top of the inside.
-
remove 1 screw at the top center of the cluster.
-
take the panel out from under the dash. This is optional, but makes the next step easy.
-
disconnect the connectors on either side of the cluster, and the speedometer cable on the back left. The speedometer cable is attached by 2 tabs you push together to make them let go. If you have MFA, you have to disconnect a vacuum line too. Older cars (A1s except for Mk2 Scirocco and Cabriolet) have the speedometer cable screwed onto the cluster.
-
tilt, and remove the cluster.
Disassemble the cluster (BE CAREFUL), there's some screws on the back, All the gauges come apart.
Remove the Needles: Use a fork or another prying thing to get the needles off, be careful - but it takes more force than you'd think to get them off. Make sure you have the needles pointing at their zero (engine off) positions. It's very important that when you put them back on - the be exactly the same way. Also - Don't be tempted to move the needles through their ranges on your own - this can stretch the springs (this applies to speedometer only)
Undo the 2 flat tip screws to let the face off the gauge.
At this point, you can scan your own faces and edit them, but I have already done that. I made them pretty too, so download mine. This is a huge Photoshop PSD file in a ZIP. It was saved using Photoshop 8.0.
