Well last time I had simply moved the air intake of the air box hose to the middle of my grill and that works but I grew tired of constantly changing or cleaning my air filter (that fuel assembly/air filter box is a pain admit it) so I did the following tech note with a new idea.
Closing up the stock airbox
Use a 16v bottom air box, this will work with a stock 8v air box - just the hose measurements are different
First gently rip all the paper from a OEM or after market cheap air filter
(I bought $2.77 STP at AutoZone) keep the grill and rubber edges as good
shape as you can.
crack your air box, and place the air filter into the upper part of the box (snug it in place good) then close the air box
Running a Hose
I got this perfect 60mm hose at a pool shop nearby... plug it into the air box (add screw or rivet as you feel comfortable but the hose I got had reinforced ends on it and it was quite snug fit...)
pass that hose between the chassis and radiator
The new Air Filter
and get a 1998 Jetta K&N air filter (they are oval instead of round) and tie wrap that sucker by drilling a small hole n the frame and getting a tie wrap plug holder from Dealership (0.95$), get extra long tie wrap, connect the hose (oh looks its also 60mm entry!) and tie down the filter, this works nice... gets first fresh air... and works in the rain :)
Tip: Air Filter
The 1998 Jetta actually uses a panel filter stock - the oval is for the Cold air intake that
you can buy for it. K&N has some universal filters that will fit too -
